Bernadette is a frazzled, genius architect who leads an interesting life, constantly in the public eye, and follows her daughter’s dreams of traveling to Antarctica. Didn't have too much heavy lifting to get to happily ever after.
Stepping away from the movie, I was absolutely shocked by the review from Rotten Tomatoes... 49%! Really!?! I had to get my friend's opinions on this one. After talking this out with some friends who actually read the book, I realized that the low review was mainly due to the translation from book to movie. Ok, got it and that makes sense.
Apparently, there were some pretty crucial details that were left out from the book, and I won't go into it since I don't spoil movies on this movie blog. Many of the reviews that I read about the film stated that the director/writers pissed away crucial details from the book, made many of the flawed characters lovable, and created a feel-good movie with no uphill journey aspect. Now I understand!
What’s pretty cool about the book is that it is written in the format of emails and text messages sent from Bernadette's phone. This is a really creative medium for the author to translate the story to the reader. I peaked at the pages and part of me actually wants to read the book.
Apparently, the director made these characters much more lovable and flawless, contrary to the book. Husband was superdad, daughter adorable, and Bernadette understandably dealing with some demons.
I felt that Bernadette, played by Cate Blanchett, was an excellent cast for this role and portrayed the inner conflict of the character very well. Also, Kristen Wiig was a fun addition to the cast as the cooky neighbor down the street.
Cinematically tasteful especially when they get to the arctic icebergs. Much of the film is within their house and neighborhood, and even that was artsy and cool. They did a good job of translating the architecture of the world that Bernedette helped design considering that is her vocation.
Not my first recommendation for a movie night, but at least I'd like to tell you it was much better than Rotten Tomatoes has to say
