Sorry to Bother You

Updated: Jan 27, 2019

8/10

A wacky movie with a genuine message. This comedic social commentary had a thematic tone similar to Wolf of Wall Street but instead with racially charged telemarketing.

This film displayed a social commentary in a comical way which was fascinating to digest. Hidden symbolism and bold choices with the plot line. Big picture concepts which were seamlessly transitioned and easy to follow. Made you even self-reflect on social norms in the corporate landscape.

There was a wholesome message of finding your voice, in addition to how black people are heard in a white corporate environment. Finding success as a telemarketing job could be a doorway to a higher calling such as becoming a “Power Caller”.

Phenomenal casting with this one! Lakeith Stanfield was also great in the movie, “Get Out” and who doesn’t love Terry Crews or Danny Glover?? Oh yeah, and remember Steven Yeun from the “Walking Dead”? Great comedic casting for the dubbed voices with David Cross and Patton Oswalt.

After seeing the trailer a while back, I was honestly a little hesitant to dive into this one. A not-so depressing tail of a guy just trying to get by and make some quick cash as a telemarketer. This wasn’t your typical career ups-and-downs sort of movie. Quite the opposite actually! This movie was comical in a melancholic sort of way including undertones of empowerment and self-reflection.

Although some of the choices were a bit bold regarding the resolution of the story, it made it all the more interesting and certainly leaves you with a lasting impression. I won't say too much - but not everyone is going to like how it all resolves, but this is a friendly reminder of the leaps and bounds attainable with movie making magic. It doesn’t always need to be logical or realistic! No matter how ridiculous it can get, as long as it tells a good story with a message, then sure! Why not!?

Date Flick? – Yep, certainly is! Excellent support actress in this story with a relationship that feels relatable.

Great Flick? – Yeah, I like this movie a lot even though it was ridiculous. They totally embraced it all.
