Rocketman

7.5/10

A jukebox musical down the yellow brick road of fame and fight with addiction.

First impressions:

That this would be some sort of ego trip, rock biopic. Since he is still with us, to glorify who wants to glorify see his own movie. I mean, I'm a fan of the guy in Kingsmen, Taron Egerton, Also, can I just point out that this movie is coming out not long after Bohemeian Rhapsody? Too soon? I mean Hollywood is always gonna see an opportunity to cash in.

However, this movie was a non-stop show, kicking down set walls and marching into musically timed choreography. Speaking from the perspective of someone who loves musicals, I admired the method of storytelling similar to one that you would see on a broadway stage. Although it was somewhat less genuine with all the song numbers, it was definitely glamorous.

Just like Bohemian Rhapsody, this movie was not exactly historically accurate.

Starts with growing up in London, relationship with parents, and the spark of passion for music began. Although there was always an ongoing battle with his parents, his grandmother continued to encourage his music talents. This encouragement led to several song and dance numbers throughout his early career of playing as a back-up pianist and performances in clubs and pubs.

The focus of this film was not exactly the meaning behind each song or kick down the doors and marching out of the closet, but more so of his battle with addiction. We start the film off with a heroic entrance into an AA meeting where Elton begins to unravel all of his demons in a storybook method. He states very clearly that he is addicted to practically everything under the sun, but is now seeking to heal and understand himself.

I’ve always been a fan of Elton’s music and fashion flair, but just didn’t know much about the guy. I grew up hearing his music featured on films and even belted anthems such as Tiny Dancer, Benny and the Jets, or Crocodile Rock at the local karaoke pub . Knowing that he is still with us today and the fact that he helped produce and write the film made me a bit skeptical of his motives.

Not only has he is on his final tour ever, Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, but he also finessed a blockbuster film, that's a cherry on top I suppose. This movie, in a way, made me wonder what his motive was with this film. After walking out of the theater and seeing the gradual conclusion, the message of recovery is clear and understood.

Date Flick – Yep! I find that musicals are a hit with couples.

Great Flick – Yea, it was a fun film to watch. Was it better than Bohemian Rhapsody? My opinion no, but I liked it.
