Midsommer

8.5 / 10

Not exactly a feel-good, summer movie.

This is one of those cult films that takes you on a culture shock infused thrill ride through a commune festival in the deep woods of Sweden. Yeah, this Midsommar Festival is not exactly, normal.

We follow the shaky relationship of Dani and Christian who put their wits to the test when they are thrust into a Euro-trip with some of their college buddies. This movie tackles mental health, and craftily dives deep into the human psyche. Forewarning - this film can get a bit disturbing at some points and could be triggering to some viewers. I will say thought - this is a well-done horror flick IN THE DAY TIME.

Wow, great cinematography and plenty of vivid colors to admire. The summer vibes were strong! Music was ominous but effectively elevated the emotional rush experienced by these American tourists during their summer trip to Sweden. Incredible set design and plenty of symbolism in the tapestries and ruins. I could tell that each building and prop had its purpose and place. Also, major props to the phenomenal costume design.

By the way – no, this movie does not tie into “Midsommar Night’s Dream” by William Shakespeare. Just in case you were wondering. This is a movie made by the same guy who made "Hereditary", Ari Aster.
