Beach Bum

6 / 10

Matthew McConaughey takes on a Lebowski sort of role and portrays "the Dude" that abides in the Florida Keys.

Hollywood hot shots in Margarita Ville - Jimmy Buffet, Isla Fisher, Martin Lawrence, Jonah Hill, and Zac Efron. With all of that acting fire power, I had high hopes. Unfortunately, I was let down.

Although the film was a bit overly explicit, the cinematography made up for it. It had a Miami Vice sort of vibe to it which makes sense considering this was backed by the Vice network, pun intended.

Brought you by the guy who made Spring Breakers, Harmony Korine If you didn't like that one, then you definitely will want to pass on this. Korine delivers a similar look as Spring Breakers -- tastefully saturated with neon and solar flares similar to a J.J. Abrams film. Unfortunately, the artistic elements were outweighed by the drunken plotline and shaky structure.

Not going to say I hated it, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend it either. It’s a bit long and drawn out. To be fair, it kind of grew on me later on, but that was only due to the consistent surge of cameos.

I enjoyed watching Matthew McConaughey portray the washed-up beach bum, "Moondog", and listening to his drunken poetry that was his classic "Alright, Alright" delivery. The big thing I was hung up on was why the characters loved him so much. No matter whatever trouble he got himself into, he was regularly forgiven and embraced. Much of his failures are seemingly unforgivable, which is why I was confused with all of the unconditional love for this "Moondog" character.

This was a great role for McConaughey, but I just wish the movie didn’t suck.
