Ant-Man and the Wasp

Updated: Jan 14, 2019

6.5/10

Paul Rudd is not only that guy from "I Love You, Man", but he's also the tiny-enormous superhero with a quantumly-advanced suite and a sense of humor.

Although Scott Lang, played by Rudd, isn't exactly Tony Stark or Clark Kent (different superhero universe, I know.. I know), he's a good dad. This movie really tries to convince you of that at least with the endless montage of adorable stay-at-home dad moments. Not only does he have to balance the responsibilities of being a divorced dad with an expensive super-suit and a lot of time on his hands, he also has to sneak away from house arrest for secret superhero shenanigans. If you didn’t see the last couple of Marvel movies, I won’t even bother... Do I think you need to see the first Antman movie to see this one, maybe not. You may miss a few inside jokes and plot points, but this story could stand alone with a few explanations.

All in all, it's a scientific rescue mission, with a few laughs and some unintentionally cheesy moments. Cheesy you ask? Not the Gouda or Parm, you idiot. Cheesy villain dialogue. The genuine type of acting that just makes you blow air out of your nose because you just don't buy it. Ya know what I mean? Anyway... there still is a decent cast with a few cameos peppered in there… I won’t say too much.

Do I think the Wasp was a necessary addition to the Marvel superhero family, not really? I'm not sure that Hope Van Dyne is critical player in the next couple of movies, but her relationship with her father, inventor of the shrink suit, is an interesting story and worth hearing if you're into high-tech gadgets and gizmos.

There are too many superhero movies these days that it's all too important to be critical of the material. Did I read the Antman comics? No. Am I a big superhero movie watcher? Occassionally but I usually rent rent them than paying the theater price.

All in all, I kinda liked it, but will need to have the plot reexplained to me just like the first Antman movie. Just another brick in the Marvel empire of movies and merchandising.

Evangeline Lilly delivers a stellar performance as the Wasp and Paul Rudd is lovable as always. Michael Douglas is like 74, but he still delivers a compelling performance! I would say that Michael Peña stole the show with his overly-caffeinated comedic relief. Much funnier than whatever TI was planning on doing in this movie.

Date Flick? - Eh… If your date likes superhero movies and Paul Rudd, sure go for it. Not my first choice though I would say.

Great Flick? - It was a fun ride, and the scientific possibilities that come with a shrink-ray make me geek out a bit. I questioned some of the acting as it wasn't compelling, but overall, I liked it.

After Credits? - Yea, there's something mid-credits, and something at the end. The thing at the end is not worth staying for... You could definitely head out after the mid-credits. No sequel teasers.
