A Good Time

9.5 / 10

Sprinting the whole way through, Robert Pattinson is out of breath in a neon world of never-ending crime with a mission to raise 10 grand to pay bail and spring his brother from jail.

What a genuinely, fantastic performance by Robert Pattinson. He has that vampire look going great in this one, but this time – he doesn’t have super powers. Well, unless you count being able to constantly get away in a chase.

Connie Nikas (Pattinson) and Nick (Benny Safdie) are two desperate dudes living in New York City who constantly find themselves in a situation looking for a way out. Together, these two bothers team up in a career of robbing banks to make ends meet. Although their criminal activities are not admirable, I was rooting for them the whole way through as their intentions were pure and their relationship as brothers was genuine.

Cinematography was fantastic and gritty. Since much of this story took place at night, the lighting was dark and the neon colors would pop and saturate the scene. Some of the chase scenes are followed with the camera lens in the most peculiar way that you feel especially present in the room with them.

Also, this film did an excellent job shedding light into the world of those who are defined as mentally challenged. It’s not often that this is present in films, especially with lead roles - which I absolutely admired. The acting was especially believable, and the dialogue had a New York slang that was very cut the crap, and get to the point. Loved it!

This is one of those on the edge-of-your-seat movies. Wow, the emotional stress was real, but not to an extent that you’re twisted up in a ball on the couch. I think the title of the film, “A Good Time”, is a bit tongue and cheek considering all of the unfortunate events that unfold for these two brothers.

Great Flick? – Yeah, excellent movie. Fast, furious, but also fun. Definitely would recommend!

Date Flick? – Possibly, if they enjoy heists and thriller movies.
